Description

ECP (Emergency Contraceptive Pill)

ECP, commonly known as the “morning-after pill,” is an oral emergency contraceptive intended to prevent pregnancy following unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure. Most ECP formulations utilize Levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestogen, to inhibit or delay ovulation.

Key Specifications

  • Active Ingredient: Levonorgestrel (typically 1.5 mg in a single dose).

  • Pharmacologic Class: Progestin; Emergency Contraceptive.

  • Primary Indication: Prevention of pregnancy within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sexual contact.

  • Mechanism of Action: Primarily acts by suppressing the surge of Luteinizing Hormone (LH), thereby delaying or preventing follicular rupture (ovulation).

  • Efficacy: Effectiveness is highest when administered as soon as possible after exposure; it does not terminate an existing pregnancy.

Professional Note: ECP is not intended for routine use as a primary method of contraception and does not provide protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
